چکیده

The performance of distributed source coding methods based on scalar quantization followed by scalar entropy coding is investigated. For a fixed quantizer, the problem is converted to that of zero-error entropy coding for bipartite graphs with a special structure. It is then experimentally shown that for bipartite graphs corresponding to jointly Gaussian sources and high-resolution uniform quantization, (i) the asymptotic rate region for zero-error entropy coding is significantly above the rates that can be achieved by Slepian-Wolf coding of the quantization indices, and (ii) a very simple scalar zero-error entropy coding scheme comes very close to the asymptotic performance. Also, a new type of non-uniform quantization based on reversing the order of compressors and expandors is introduced, and it is shown that under the proposed framework, non-uniform quantization can outperform uniform quantization, in contrast with point-to-point communication scenarios.

Robust Distributed Source Coding with Arbitrary Number of Encoders and Practical Code Design Technique

The robustness property can be added to DSC system at the expense of reducing performance, i.e., increasing the sum-rate. The aim of designing robust DSC schemes is to trade off between system robustness and compression efficiency. In this paper, after deriving an inner bound on the rate–distortion region for the quadratic Gaussian MDC based RDSC system with two encoders, the structure of...

Analysis and application of turbo coder based distributed video coding

This work investigates a Distributed Video Coding (DVC) method for single view video sources. DVC is different from hybrid block-based video coding as there is no temporal prediction included in the encoding process. This makes video codecs with low encoder workload possible. DVC in this thesis is an extension of source coding with side information, a subset of Slepian-Wolf coding. The theoreti...

Distributed Lossy Source Coding Using BCH-DFT Codes

Distributed source coding, separate encoding (compression) and joint decoding of statistically dependent sources, arises in an increasing number of applications like sensor networks and multiview video coding. Many of those applications are highly interactive, requiring the development of low-delay, energy-limited communication and computing schemes. Currently, this compression is performed by ...

Distributed Source Coding: Symmetric Rates and Applications to Sensor Networks

We address the problem of distributed source coding using a practical and constructive approach 1], referred to as Distributed source coding using syndromes (DISCUS), with applications to sensor networks. We propose low complexity encoding and decoding methods based on linear codes, to achieve all points in the achievable rate region of Slepian-Wolf 2] problem. The extension of these concepts t...

Superposition Coding for Source Coding with Side Information at the Decoder

Problems of noisy channel coding with side information at the encoder and of lossy source coding with side information at the decoder have many practical applications. Unfortunately, the theoretical performance bounds are obtained by randomly partitioning a randomly generated source or channel code into an ensemble of channel or source codes, which is highly non-practical. A scheme has recently...
